On Saturday, April 5, Congressman Pete Sessions and other North Texas congressional office representatives hosted a service academy forum at Mountain View College. The forum provided information and answered questions about the academy nomination process and requirements, and life at service academies.
The forum featured guest speakers that included academy graduates, current midshipmen and cadets, and Reserved Officer Training Corps recruiters.
Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33) also spoke at the forum emphasizing the importance of the military and the effect that it has on Texas.
United States Merchant Marine Academy Midshipman Parker Amy spoke at the event about his experiences as a midshipman at the Merchant Marine Academy.
“I am 20 years old, and I have been to five continents,” Parker said. “I have been in charge of multi-million dollar maritime equipment, and I have been to places like South Africa and Colombia.”
At the forum a congressional liaison panel answered questions about the congressional nomination process and how candidates are reviewed, processed and ultimately offered appointments to the service academies.
A panel with Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps ROTC representatives also answered questions about ROTC.
The forum was moderated by West Point graduate Lt. Gen. Charles R. Hamm. Gen. Hamm graduated from West Point in 1956 and served as superintendent of the Air Force Academy.
