On Jan. 24, DECA competed in its district competition at North Garland High School. Ryan Safdarinia, Ian Sellers, Thomas Bills, Andrew Taylor, Kevin Armbruster, Pierce Nelson, Jake Hercamp, Nicholas Free, Jeremy Jones and Adam Wechsler all advanced to state.
The competition consisted of a test and then a form of presentation in various marketing areas including sports marketing, restaurant management and community service projects.
Andrew Taylor, Kevin Armbruster and Thomas Bills are members of a team that advanced to state under sports marketing.
“We all knew we were ready, and we proved it by performing well at the competition,” Thomas said. “We prepared our presentation for the judges constantly in order to succeed at district, and we’re looking forward to seeing what we can do at the next level.”
“We walked into district with a mission,” Andrew said. “And we walked out with a ticket to state.”
State competition will be Feb. 25-27 at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Dallas. While the team’s performances were strong enough to make it to state, more work needs to be done in order to win there. Teams who win at state will advance to the national competition in Orlando, Fla.
“We really want to perform well so that we can go to nationals,” Ryan said. “There will be a lot of strong competition. We are working with our teacher, Mrs. Koshkin, every day with hopes to succeed at state. Our competition required a role play, and we continue to practice with role plays in order to be ready.”
