The varsity soccer team advanced to the fourth round of the playoffs on Tuesday, April 7, after beating Harker Heights. They beat Skyline on Friday, March 27, and North Garland on Thursday, April 2.
The team came out quickly against Skyline, scoring a goal in the first 10 minutes of the game, but the next score for either team wouldn’t happen until the end of the second half. The score was 2-0 until the last 10 minutes of the game, when Skyline scored a goal off of a penalty kick caused by an unnecessary foul.
Between the first and second goals for the team, scored by Danny Garcia and Edwin Rodriguez, the quality of play wasn’t up to their expectations, but they were still able to finish with the win.
“We came out slow and didn’t really have a high intensity level,” senior Spencer Lange said. “We dropped our guard, but we were able to show our ability to close out at the end of the game.”
The second game was played more efficiently against North Garland. The team started with a quick score again, leading 1-0 in just the first five minutes. The final score was 3-0 with goals from Danny Garcia, Manuel Granados and Fernando Gomez.
The team then went on to beat Harker Heights 3-0, playing at a similar intensity as in the game against North Garland. Danny Garcia had two goals and Michael Garcia had one.
“Our tempo was a lot better in the second and third game,” senior Joe Swiney said. “We controlled the tempo and attacked well throughout the whole game, which we didn’t do too well in the first game.”
The next game will be played on Friday, April 10, in Round Rock against Lake Travis, which has only lost one game in their season.
“Ultimately our goal is to win state,” senior Bryan Harris said. “That’s why we’re here. We believe we can win it all, and we’re aiming to do that.”
