Oscar Nominee Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Doctor Strange in Marvel’s newest film of the same name. Benedict puts his own style into his Marvel superhero which was released to theaters Nov. 4.

Marvel movies are now constantly the biggest hit in the box office. Three of the 10 top-grossing movies of all time are Marvel movies. Being a Marvel superhero is now one of the most sought-after roles for actors, and the newest role has gone to Benedict Cumberbatch.

Cumberbatch is known for his sarcasm and arrogance in his past roles, and he puts this attitude into Doctor Strange. Doctor Strange is a cocky doctor who is lacking kindness and humility. Doctor Strange gets into a terrible accident due to his arrogance which destroys his hands and causes him to embark on a journey in search of healing.

In his search for healing, Doctor Strange finds more than he sought for and discovers a magical power he could not have imagined in his wildest dream. The film shows Doctor Strange’s journey to master his newfound magical ability as well as his change in character in his path toward enlightenment. The film combines action in a battle of good and evil with humor to create a combination that keeps viewers entertained throughout the film.

The most impressive aspect of the film are its special effects. The film bends the world and challenges the imagination as sorcerers such as Doctor Strange mold the world and change the fabric of time. The special effects are very similar to the film Inception (2010) in the way that the special effects help challenge one’s preconceived notions of his world.

Doctor Strange strays from the ideal cookie-cutter Marvel superheroes because it involves more magic than superpowers. Doctor Strange is more like a sorcerer than an Avenger, and he wavers from former Marvel superheroes as he saves the world in the shadows rather than saving the world in the middle of a populated area. Although this new Marvel superhero provides new characteristics from other Marvel superheroes, many things stay the same.

Doctor Strange is an ignorant person who is lacking morals at the beginning of the film. This character is considered to be one of Cumberbatch’s signature roles. He played a character with similar qualities in his Oscar-nominated performance in The Imitation Game (2015). However this character is also like Robert Downey Jr.’s character in Iron Man (2008) who is also ignorant and somewhat of a showoff. The Marvel Universe seems to be recycling characters in a way and keeps expanding their world by adding similar characters who have different powers.

Doctor Strange is the 14th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the movie felt very similar to other Marvel films. Even though the Marvel Universe seems to be getting a little repetitive, the studio has found a formula for creating successful films. Marvel movies are family friendly while also adding action and humor that draws in older audiences. Doctor Strange made $85.1 million during its opening weekend, and the Doctor Strange franchise will continue to be a success in the box office as Doctor Strange will feature in other Marvel Movies and the franchise will have a sequel of its own.

Doctor Strange provides a small amount of information to go along with the Marvel Universe as a whole but every Marvel fan enjoys getting that much closer to knowing all of Marvel’s secrets. Doctor Strange will keep viewers entertained and give them a fun moviegoing experience. However this raises the question, how long can Marvel continue to make somewhat similar movies before audiences stop being interested in the studio’s films?
