Media sites compete for the attention of teens with video-games. Every action we take is another moment of time spent, and with the increasing amount of tasks and things to do, the majority of people are left with little time to spare.
This little time left allocated to young consumers leaves companies wanting them to focus their attention on their own product or service.
This is because the more time that people spend using a product or service, the more likely they are to continue subscribing or using it, and it will be increasingly harder for them to live without.
In the latest fiscal year report (Q4 2018) shareholder letter, Netflix stated that their “growth is based on how good our experience is, compared to all the other screen time experiences from which consumers choose. Our focus is not Disney+, Amazon or others, but on how we can improve our experience for members.”
Netflix is one media platform that currently finds trouble establishing a median with other services as the increasing amount of video-gaming takes a toll on their active audience numbers.
“We compete with (and lose to) Fortnite more than HBO (Home Box Office),” Netflix revealed in their latest fiscal year report.
Reed Hastings, the Chief Executive Officer of Netflix, thinks of this process as winning time away.
“I think about it really as winning time away, entertainment time from other activities,” Hastings said.
“So, instead of doing Xbox or Fortnite or Youtube or HBO or a long list, we want to win and provide a better experience. No advertising on demand. Incredible content,” he added.
Video games have become a space for friends to hang out, even when they are not physically together.
As such, that can take a large portion of time away from watching television and spending time on other media sites such as Netflix or YouTube.
However, Fortnite is only one of a vast array of video games that have been commonly mentioned and played in today’s online world, so surely there is more for media sites to be competing with.
As more and more media sites come into existence, the amount of time people have is going to be more precious than ever before. Not only is each media site competing with other sites, but they are competing with gaming as well.
